Food supplement E420, referred to in the chemical industry as sorbitol or glucite, is a six-atomic alcohol with a sweetish taste.
It is extracted mainly from glucose by hydrogenation. In nature, sorbitol can be found in some types of algae, stone fruits (apples, apricots) and other plants. Most of all sorbitol is found in the fruits of rowan. In reasonable doses, sorbitol is used in diet, as it is not a carbohydrate. It also helps to reduce the consumption of vitamins B1 and B6 in the body, improves intestinal microflora.

In the food industry, the E420 additive is used as a sweetener, emulsifier, complexing agent, and texture agent. Sorbitol can draw moisture from the air, which allows products based on it to remain fresh for a long time. Therefore, the food supplement E420 is also used in the food industry as a water-retaining agent.
